Memory

Guide · Users and administrators · Applies to 5.0.192

Eldric remembers what you tell it, across conversations: your preferences, facts about you and the people you mention, and ways of doing things that worked. This page explains what it keeps, who can see it, and how to change or remove it.

Facts you tell Eldric

Say it in the chat: "Remember that my favourite colour is green", "I prefer short answers", "My time zone is Vienna". Eldric decides by itself when to store and when to look something up; you do not need a command.

  • Each fact has a structured name, such as color.favorite or clothing.top. Telling Eldric something new about the same thing updates the fact instead of adding a second one, and the chat shows the old and the new value.
  • From 5.0.191 the chat sees one memory per user. A fact stored in one conversation is there in the next.
  • New facts are private to you unless you share them.

Conditions and people

From 5.0.192 a fact can hold only under a condition, in your own words, and it can be about someone other than you.

  • "In summer I wear T-shirts, in winter pullovers" are two facts with different conditions, and both are kept. When Eldric recalls one, the other comes with it, so a fact that only holds in summer is never read as always true. "In summer" and "summer" count as two different conditions.
  • "My daughter is allergic to nuts" is stored as a fact about your daughter, not about you.
  • Each fact remembers which conversation it came from.

Seeing what Eldric remembers

  • Ask: "What do you remember about me?" or "What do you know about my clothing?". Eldric can list everything you may read, or only one area.
  • In the web chat, every change to memory shows a card under the reply: Memory updated with the old and new value, Stored in memory, Removed from memory, or why nothing was stored or removed. A lookup shows a card with each fact, its condition, whom it is about and when it was learned.
  • Type /memory to open the memory page, where you can browse, search and edit your entries.

Changing and removing

  • Tell Eldric: "Forget my favourite colour". The card confirms what was removed.
  • /forget <name> removes one fact by its name. If the fact is also shared, the chat asks whether to remove the shared copies too.
  • /remember <text> stores a note exactly as you typed it.
  • Deleting your account erases your private memory; see Your data.

When an administrator has turned on role enforcement, a viewer has no memory tools, and removing memories is reserved to administrators.

What Eldric learns by itself

Besides the facts you state, Eldric reviews finished conversations when a node is idle and keeps what it found worth remembering. It skips conversations younger than an hour.

Deleting a conversation keeps the facts you stated in it but removes their link to the conversation. Whether what Eldric learned from it is forgotten too depends on a setting your administrator controls, and it is off by default; see Deleting a conversation. The web chat's confirmation tells you which happened.

Methods that worked

From 5.0.189 Eldric can keep a way of doing something, cut into steps, and offer it again when you ask for something similar. A method is only offered when you ask; it is never added to a conversation on its own. An agent may apply a method only after a person has used it successfully, and the chat asks you afterwards whether it worked. Recording methods needs at least the developer role.

Methods are also learned from checked task episodes, including concluded experiments; see Task episodes.

Who can see your memory

  • Your private facts are visible only to you. Other users, including administrators, do not read them through the chat or the memory routes.
  • Facts shared with a project, a group or the whole tenant are visible to its members.
  • An administrator can remove entries in bulk across users (for example all entries under one name) and, while checking such a removal first, sees example names of the entries it would remove.

For administrators

  • Memory needs the memory feature in your licence.
  • Automatically adding remembered facts to every conversation is off by default; GET|PUT /api/v1/memory/proactive/config changes it.
  • Eldric's own learning runs when a node is idle. Setting the dream cadence to manual stops it running by itself.
  • There is no switch that turns a single user's memory off.
